Picture this. You're flicking through the pages of any 2008 issue of Vogue or Elle, and one unique face keeps popping up on almost every leaf. She isn't one of those steely-eyed, eastern-European waifs with an unpronouncable name (see Snejana Onopka or Katarzyna Strusinska). Instead, this girl is a steely-eyed, BRITISH waif with unpronouncable name. This girl is called Agyness Deyn.
Born in Failsworth, Manchester, the 13 year old Agyness (born one Laura Hollins) got work in a chip shop, like any young girl might at that age. But we know now that Laura wasn't just an ordinary girl. Humble beginnings, eh. From there, she went on to develop her amazingly kooky sense of style, which would later be praised by the fashion elite, and swooned over by 'Reveal' readers, naively referring to it as 'edgy'. It was also as a teen in Manchester that Laura befriended a budding young fashion designer called Henry Holland, who had a quite a penchant for fluorescent colours and T shirts with raunchy slogans about the biggest names in fashion (see
here). Together, Aggy and Henry started their journey to London to make all their fabulously high fashion dreams come true.
After a few miniscule initial months of being wannabes, the pair became London's it-boy and it-girl, invited to every runway-stomping fashion show and champagne-fuelled after party. Agyness's unique look hadn't been seen since the 80s and gave the London fashion scene a much needed refreshing revival.
Nowadays, people argue that Agyness has become over-exposed, with Christopher Bailey even dropping her from the Burberry campaigns for fear of her reputation overshadowing the clothes. She was also voted number 1 on a list of the 100 Most Annoying People of 2008 for appearing in too many newspapers and magazines. So, the question is: Is Agyness Deyn's spark being put out by the amount of attention she gets in the media?
